Advocacy Volunteers

York Advocacy Hub is a service delivered by York Mind which helps people who live in York understand what their rights are and helps them put across their wishes to people in services such as social care, housing and health.

For more information on our work please visit our website at www.yorkadvocacy.org.uk

We are looking to expand to recruit and train volunteers to run appointment sessions and support with our benefits project, both at our office in Clarence Street and out in the community.

Your role would be to meet with clients face to face and get to understand the help they need by listening and identifying what their advocacy issues are. You may then help clients to attend meetings with other organisations or advocate on their behalf around the issues that matter to them through meetings, telephone calls and emails.

You will also use our secure, electronic database to record case notes, as well as following up on actions.

You will be given full training and will be supported by experienced advocates.

We would love to hear from you if you:

  • care about people’s rights and making sure they have a voice
  • like working with people and feel confident in putting other people’s wishes across to others
  • are able to give a few hours of your time a week
  • reliable, caring and confidential
  • interested in learning more about people’s rights and how to support them in an independent role.

We will provide a full induction and training for volunteers, as well as ongoing 1:1 and group supervision.

How to apply: please visit the following web pages where you can download a copy of our Volunteer Application Form; alternatively, you can give the Advocacy Hub a call on 01904 414357 and we will send a form to you in the post,

The recruitment process will involve an informal discussion with people delivering the advocacy project, collection of references and an enhanced DBS check.

If you’d like to chat about the role please call Jo Holloway-Green at York Advocacy Hub on 01904 414357.
